Owning a car in Switzerland: purchase, leasing, costs, insurance, vignette

Do you need a car in Switzerland?

Switzerland has excellent public transport. A car is useful for:

  • Rural or mountain living
  • Family with young children
  • Frequent off-peak business travel
  • Leisure (skiing, hiking, weekends)

But in cities (Zurich, Geneva, Lausanne, Basel) it's often more expensive and less practical than PT + car-sharing (Mobility).

Purchase vs leasing

Purchase

  • Cash or credit (4–7% rate)
  • Average new sedan: CHF 35,000–50,000
  • 3-year-old sedan: CHF 18,000–28,000
  • New city car: CHF 20,000–30,000
  • New electric: CHF 35,000–65,000+
  • Premium (Audi, BMW, Mercedes): CHF 50,000–100,000+

Leasing

  • Typically 36–48 months
  • 10–25% upfront
  • Monthly CHF 350–900 depending on vehicle
  • Return with km limits (10–20,000 km/yr)
  • Bank guidance: max 10% of monthly income

Annual costs

Mandatory insurance

  • RC: CHF 500–1,200/yr (young driver up to CHF 3,000+)
  • Partial casco: CHF 300–800 extra
  • Full casco: CHF 800–2,000 extra (recommended for new or leased)
  • Comparators: Comparis, Bonus.ch, Moneyland

Cantonal vehicle tax

  • Varies by canton, displacement and CO2
  • Geneva: CHF 350–1,500/yr (petrol), EV discounts
  • Vaud: CHF 280–1,200/yr
  • Zurich: CHF 200–900/yr
  • Ticino: CHF 250–1,100/yr
  • Schaffhausen, Schwyz: cheapest
  • Geneva, Ticino: most expensive

Motorway vignette

  • CHF 40/yr to use Swiss motorways (mandatory at crossing)
  • Bought at border posts, petrol stations, post offices, online
  • Digital vignette available since 2023 (e-vignette via OFROU)

Fuel and electricity

  • Unleaded 95: CHF 1.75–2.00/litre (2025–2026)
  • Diesel: CHF 1.80–2.05/litre
  • Fast charging EV: CHF 0.40–0.80/kWh by network
  • Home charging: CHF 0.18–0.30/kWh by canton and time

Technical inspection (OCN/SAN)

  • First: 4 years after registration
  • Then: every 2 years (yearly after 8 years)
  • Cost: CHF 75–150

Maintenance

  • Minor service: CHF 250–500
  • Major service: CHF 600–1,200
  • 4-season tyres or summer/winter swap: CHF 200–800/yr
  • Garage: CHF 80–180/hour labour

Parking

  • Building space: CHF 100–350/month by canton
  • Public parking subscription: CHF 100–450/month
  • Resident sticker: CHF 200–800/yr by canton
  • City meter: CHF 1–3.5/hour

Tips

  • Compare insurance and raise excess to reduce premium
  • Electric makes financial sense with home charging (paid back in 4–7 yrs vs petrol)
  • Mobility car-sharing (~CHF 200/yr + hourly) often replaces ownership in cities
  • 3–5 year used cars offer the best value curve
  • Cross-border workers must register their car in Switzerland within 12 months (see dedicated article)
