Why an adult CFC

Obtaining a CFC (Federal Certificate of Capacity) as an adult lets you:

  • Secure a job in a shortage sector (health, construction, IT, restaurant)
  • Increase pay (often +CHF 10,000–25,000)
  • Access higher education (federal certificate, diploma, HES via professional maturity)
  • Regularise professional status (immigrants, career changers)

The 4 adult routes

1. Shortened formal apprenticeship (Art. 18 LFPr)

  • 2 years instead of 3–4
  • Employer contract
  • Apprentice pay: CHF 1,500–3,000/month (negotiated, higher than for youth)
  • Same exam as standard CFC

2. Adult qualification procedure (Art. 32 OFPr)

  • For adults with 5+ years of experience in the trade
  • No apprenticeship contract needed
  • Self-paced or evening prep classes
  • Direct exam
  • Cost: CHF 500–1,500 registration + optional prep courses

3. Prior-learning recognition (Art. 33 OFPr)

  • For adults with 5+ years documented experience
  • Detailed portfolio assessed by experts
  • Possible complementary modules if gaps identified
  • Faster than the full exam
  • Available for: ASSC, commercial employee, production mechanic, household manager, etc.

4. Standard late apprenticeship (3–4 yrs)

  • Adult signs a normal apprenticeship contract
  • Classic apprentice pay
  • Used for full career change

  • ASSC (health): strong demand, attractive pay
  • Commercial employee: very versatile
  • IT specialist (CFC): sought-after, many openings
  • Logistician: acute shortage
  • Cook: chronic hospitality shortage
  • Electrician: shortage, attractive pay
  • Automotive mechanic: stable and well-paid

Funding

  • Adult apprentice salary: negotiable (CHF 1,500–3,000/month depending on trade and experience)
  • Cantonal adult training allowance: by canton (GE, VD, NE, JU, FR offer specific support)
  • Unemployment (LACI): can fund training if recognised by ORP
  • Cantonal grant: assessed on household income
  • Top-up allowances: some cantons pay CHF 500–1,500/month during training
  • Federal subsidy: 50% off Art. 32 exam fees (up to CHF 9,500)

Requirements and tips

  • Regional language proficiency (French/German/Italian): B1 minimum for technical trades, B2 for health/commerce
  • Capacity for self-study and independent work for Art. 32 and Art. 33
  • Find a partner employer: many companies support and fund dual training
  • Contact your cantonal orientation office: free counsellors specialised for adults
  • Plan 12–24 months of prep for Art. 32 and Art. 33 routes
